From Venice to Trevignano — Discover the Timeless Beauty of Italy
Trish Donovan • October 31, 2025
Exploring the heart and soul of Italy, one unforgettable city at a time.
Few places in the world capture the heart quite like Italy. It’s a country that feels like a dream, where art, food, and history come alive in every piazza, every glass of wine, and every golden sunset. From iconic cities to charming lakeside escapes, Italy offers endless inspiration for travelers who crave beauty, culture, and connection.
After visiting Italy several times, I’ve learned that while famous destinations like Rome, Florence, and Venice are every bit as magical as people say, it’s often the lesser-known corners that leave the deepest impression. Here are a few of my favorite Italian places and moments that continue to inspire my love for travel.
1. Trevignano Romano — The Hidden Gem by Lake Bracciano
Just an hour north of Rome lies the peaceful town of Trevignano Romano, perched along the shores of Lake Bracciano. It’s a quiet escape where locals linger over espresso in open-air cafés, children play by the waterfront, and pastel-colored homes line cobblestone streets.
For travelers, Trevignano offers the perfect blend of authentic Italy and serene retreat, making it ideal for a day trip or a relaxing weekend away from the bustle of the capital.
I stayed at a lovely little hotel, Albergo Borgo Vista Lago, located right across the street from the lake. My room was charming, and the view was incredible. Not all rooms overlook the water, and accommodations here have the character and variety you’d expect from an independent Italian hotel rather than a big-city chain. If you decide to stay, be sure to ask about your room type when booking.
One of my favorite things about the hotel was how centrally located it was, with easy access to great food and lakeside strolls. Some of my travel companions ate almost exclusively at Le Ballon Ristorante, where the food and service were exceptional. There are plenty of other restaurants nearby that offer equally delicious menus and that quintessential Italian ambiance.
Across the lake, near the historic castle of Bracciano, the Vigna Caio Relais & Spa provides a more luxurious experience. Its restaurant terrace offers breathtaking views and an elevated dining atmosphere, perfect for a special evening or a peaceful escape. It’s a bit more secluded and not as walkable to attractions, but that’s part of its charm—a quiet retreat with incredible scenery just below the castle walls.
During my time in Italy, I also took several day trips from Rome to explore more of the country’s rich history and artistry. One city that captured my heart immediately was Florence, a place that feels like it was designed for dreamers, artists, and romantics alike.
2. Florence — Where Art, History, and Heart Collide
Florence is the soul of the Renaissance, a city that seems to glow from within. The beauty of its architecture, art, and atmosphere is unmatched. Whether you are standing before Michelangelo’s David, watching the sunset from Piazzale Michelangelo, or wandering across the Ponte Vecchio, Florence inspires a feeling of timeless wonder.
Beyond its galleries and cathedrals, the city’s real magic lies in the rhythm of everyday life. The morning cappuccino ritual, the sound of church bells echoing through narrow streets, and the laughter spilling out of trattorias after sunset all make Florence feel alive in a way that is uniquely its own.
I have been enamored with Florence since the very first time I traveled there. From the moment I arrived, I felt at home. As someone who loves architecture and art, it felt like the perfect city for me. There was never enough time to see all of the incredible works housed in Florence’s museums, but I made the most of my day trips from Rome and soaked in as much beauty as possible.
Although I haven’t yet stayed overnight in Florence, a close friend highly recommends the Relais Hotel Centrale Dimora Storica. They have stayed several times and after researching it myself, I have added it to the top of my list for my next visit.
After spending time surrounded by Florence’s art and history, you might just be ready to experience a city that feels more like a dream than a destination. Venice was next on my list, and it proved to be every bit as enchanting as I imagined.
3. Venice — The City of Bridges, Dreams, and Reflections
Venice is unlike anywhere else on earth. Built on water, it is both mysterious and romantic, a place where every narrow alley leads to something beautiful. The Grand Canal and St. Mark’s Square are must-sees, but it is in the quiet backstreets and lesser-known islands where Venice truly reveals its soul.
Take a vaporetto to Burano or Murano, or simply wander until you get lost. The sound of water lapping against ancient walls and the soft glow of lanterns reflecting off the canals create a kind of magic that invites you to slow down and be fully present.
Venice was the first place in Italy I took my sister during her very first international trip. It was my first time there as well, and I loved that we were able to discover it together. We visited in early December, which meant cooler temperatures but fewer crowds than in the busy summer months.
We found Venice to be an easy city to explore on foot, filled with excellent food, unique shopping, and more history and architecture than you could ever take in during one visit. We stayed at a charming small hotel, Hotel Bel Sito, located in the historic center not far from St. Mark’s Square.
One of the highlights of our trip was climbing the stairs to the terrace of St. Mark’s Basilica. The steps are narrow and steep, but the view from the upper terrace is absolutely worth it. For those who prefer an easier option, there is also an elevator to the top of the St. Mark’s Bell Tower, which offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the city.
We also joined a tour to Burano and Murano, which included a visit to a glass factory. Watching the glass-blowing demonstration in Murano was fascinating, and Burano’s colorful houses and canals made it one of the most picturesque spots I have ever visited. If you have time, I highly recommend taking a tour that includes both islands.
After exploring the canals and colorful islands of Venice, I suggest a trip to the city that first made me fall in love with Italy. Rome was my introduction to this incredible country, and it remains one of my favorite places to return to again and again. Every visit feels familiar, yet there is always something new to discover.
4. Rome — The Heartbeat of Italy
Rome is a city where ancient history and modern life blend effortlessly. Around every corner, there is a story waiting to be uncovered, from the grandeur of the Colosseum to the quiet beauty of a tucked-away piazza. The city’s energy is undeniable, yet there are also countless moments of peace if you know where to look.
I still remember the first time I stood in front of the Colosseum. It was awe-inspiring to imagine the history that unfolded within those walls. Over the years, I have returned to see it from different angles and at different times of day, and it never loses its magic. The same can be said for the Trevi Fountain, where I have tossed more than one coin while making a wish to ensure I would come back to Rome. So far, that tradition has worked perfectly.
Beyond the famous landmarks, some of my favorite memories are from simply wandering. I love strolling through the Trastevere neighborhood, where cobblestone streets, ivy-covered buildings, and lively cafés create the perfect atmosphere for an evening walk. The Pantheon continues to amaze me each time I step inside, and I always take time to enjoy gelato nearby while people-watching in the square. If you are facing the Pantheon, there is a great restaurant just around the corner called Armando al Pantheon.
For first-time visitors, staying near the Trevi Fountain or Spanish Steps makes it easy to experience many of the city’s highlights, with endless options for dining and shopping nearby. On my first trip, I splurged and stayed at the Westin Excelsior Rome, which was both beautiful and conveniently located for exploring the city.
I took my son and his girlfriend on that first trip to Rome. We left just after Christmas and stayed through New Year’s Day. We did the typical sightseeing, but we were incredibly lucky to get tickets to a New Year’s Eve celebration led by the Pope at St. Peter’s Basilica. After the service, we joined the festivities at Piazza del Popolo, where the celebration was lively, energetic, and full of joy. It was an unforgettable way to ring in the new year.
No matter how many times I visit or what time of year I go, Rome always finds a way to surprise me. Whether it is a new café tucked down an alley, the golden glow of the Spanish Steps at sunset, or a breathtaking view over the Tiber River, the Eternal City never stops reminding me why I fell in love with Italy in the first place.
A Journey to Remember
Italy has a way of capturing the heart like no other place on earth. From the peaceful charm of Trevignano Romano to the artistic soul of Florence, the timeless allure of Venice, and the vibrant spirit of Rome, each destination offers its own kind of magic. Every visit reveals something new, whether it’s a breathtaking view, a quiet moment in a café, or a connection with someone who makes the world feel a little smaller.
Traveling through Italy reminds me that beauty is everywhere — in the details, the traditions, and the people who bring each city to life. It’s a country that invites you to slow down, to savor, and to simply be present.
No matter how many times I go, Italy always feels like coming home. I hope this glimpse into my travels inspires you to begin your own Italian story and discover what makes this country so unforgettable.

Ireland has a way of wrapping itself around your heart. It is a country of story and song, where ancient castles watch over rolling green hills, and the sound of laughter spills out of cozy pubs onto cobblestone streets. On my recent journey through the Emerald Isle, I found beauty not only in the famous landmarks, but also in the quiet in-between moments: a conversation with a local, a misty morning walk, a shared smile over a warm cup of tea. Here is a glimpse into that Irish adventure and a taste of the experiences that might inspire your own. Adare Manor: A Fairytale Beginning Our journey began at the magnificent Adare Manor in County Limerick, a neo-Gothic estate that feels like it was borrowed from a storybook. The moment you arrive, you notice the details: the sweeping stone arches, the carefully manicured gardens, and the way the light spills across the River Maigue. Adare Manor is more than a place to sleep. It is an experience. You can linger over afternoon tea in the grand drawing room, stroll the vast grounds, or simply sit outside and listen to the soft rustle of the trees. Golfers will love the championship course, while others may prefer exploring the charming village of Adare, with its thatched cottages and small boutiques. It is the kind of place where time slows down and you give yourself permission to simply enjoy. A Medieval Feast to Remember at Bunratty Castle Not far from Shannon, we stepped back in time with an unforgettable medieval banquet at Bunratty Castle. The moment we arrived, the stone walls and the soft glow of torchlight made it easy to imagine life centuries ago. For one evening, the modern world melted away as we dined in true medieval fashion. There were no utensils, just hearty food, warm laughter, and the lively spirit of the feast. The great hall filled with music and storytelling, each performance bringing Ireland’s history to life in a way that felt both fun and deeply rooted in tradition. Between the songs, the camaraderie, and the warm welcome from the castle’s hosts, this experience became one of the most memorable experiences of our entire journey. Georgian Grace in Dublin In Dublin, our home base was a beautiful Georgian mansion that blended old-world charm with modern comfort. Tall windows, high ceilings, and elegant details gave the property a sense of timelessness, while the city just outside felt vibrant and alive. Dublin itself is a delightful mix of history and energy. You can spend the day visiting historic sites or wandering through museums, then step into a neighborhood pub and be greeted like a regular. Just a short walk from our stay, we found a cozy pub where we enjoyed traditional Irish dishes, live music, and the kind of warm conversation that makes you feel instantly at home. If you want to understand Ireland, spend an evening in a Dublin pub listening to local musicians and chatting with the people around you. The Magic of Irish Dance No visit to Ireland feels complete without witnessing Irish dance. We attended an Irish dance exhibition that was nothing short of mesmerizing. The dancers moved with precision and power, their feet tapping out intricate rhythms while the music lifted the room. It was more than a performance. It was a celebration of heritage. The combination of music, movement, and emotion told a story of pride, resilience, and joy that you could feel as much as see. Blarney Castle and the Gift of Gab Of course, Ireland’s sense of fun and legend shines brightly at Blarney Castle. Climbing the narrow, winding staircase to reach the top is an adventure of its own, with each turn revealing another glimpse of the surrounding countryside. At the summit waits the famous Blarney Stone. Leaning back to kiss it is a little bit nerve-wracking and a whole lot memorable. According to legend, that kiss brings the gift of eloquence. Whether or not the magic is real, the experience certainly is, and it adds a playful chapter to any Irish journey. The Breathtaking Cliffs of Moher The Cliffs of Moher are one of Ireland’s most iconic sights, and seeing them in person is truly unforgettable. Standing at the edge, you feel the wind off the Atlantic, hear the distant crash of waves, and look out at an endless stretch of sea that seems to meet the sky. The cliffs rise dramatically from the water, rugged and powerful, yet there is a surprising calm in the way the landscape unfolds. It is one of those places that invites you to pause, breathe, and simply take it all in. For many travelers, this becomes a defining moment of their time in Ireland. A Journey That Stays With You Ireland is not just a destination you visit. It is a place you feel. From the refined luxury of Adare Manor to the lively atmosphere of a medieval banquet at Bunratty Castle, and from the elegance of Dublin’s Georgian streets to the wild beauty of the Cliffs of Moher, every moment offers something meaningful. You may arrive for the castles, the cliffs, and the famous landmarks, but you leave with memories of kindness, conversation, and a warmth that follows you home. Whether you are drawn to history, nature, culture, or simply the joy of discovering somewhere new, Ireland welcomes you with open arms. So when you are ready to plan your own adventure through the Emerald Isle, TJT Travel can help you create an experience that captures the beauty, spirit, and magic of Ireland. Sláinte.
